Youth Bridge

Bridge is a game full of strategy and tactics, part science, part math, part logic and part reason. It embodies cooperation, logic and problem solving and in studies has been linked to higher test scores among children. Bridge is also a partnership game. Trust, communication and patience are the essential attributes of winning at bridge.

District 3 of the ACBL is getting out the message that bridge is good for kids! On Monday, January 18, the Winter Youth Bridge Tournament was held at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye Brook, New York. Blair Seidler, a former youth international player and Enith Friedman Berg, a teacher of bridge to youth, directed the tournament.

Twelve youths from local area bridge clubs came to participate. Some of these students, ages 11 – 15 have been playing for as long as 2 years, others for as little as 6 months. All were enthusiastic and serious about playing. The teams played 15 boards and a pizza party was provided for all.

Winners of the tournament were Shira Chait and Danielle Wolk, beating their all time personal percentage of 81.3. Newcomer Jacqui Hebner, playing only 4 months, along with Abigail Goldstein, came in a close second. Other teams included: brothers Robert Klopf and Kenneth Klopf and David Morris and Matthew Morris. Lauren Weisfeld and Gaby Altman, Caleb Esrig and Justin Stein were also among the participants.

As a District, we encourage young people to embrace the game. For more information about bridge for youth in our area, please email Enith Friedman Berg @ ecd726@gmail.com
