NAP History for Everyone

North American Pairs or NAP has been a major ACBL pair championship since 1979. The event was originally known as the Grand National Pairs. The Grand National Pairs became the North American Pairs in 1987 and a special form of the event for non-Life Masters was also added. Winners of the North American Pairs are awarded the Baldwin Trophy. The trophy honors Russell Baldwin, former director and treasurer of the ACBL and co-inventor, with Bill McKenney, of the McKenney-Baldwin movements used in tournament bridge.

At the district final, both players must have qualified at the club level and must be members of the parent district. A fixed amount prize will be awarded in all flights as follows:

1. In districts with three qualifiers, the 1st place qualifiers will receive $700 per person and the 2nd place qualifiers will receive $300 per person. The 3rd place qualifiers will be invited to participate in the national level finals, but will not receive any prize.

2. District 3 will award all winners who attend and play in the National NAP finals a $100 per person/$200 per pair.

The monetary award from the ACBL will be available on site. Qualifiers must play in the national level event until eliminated to receive the award.

There will be no entry fee for the national level of the event.

FLIGHT's B and C ONLY

The District final for Flight's B and C ONLY will be held at two sites. The event will be matchpointed and ranked as one field. If the top three scoring pairs in each flight play at the same site, then the highest ranked pair at the other location will become the third qualifying pair to the national final.

This change does not affect masterpoint awards.
As per ACBL Conditions of Contest, if a qualified pair declines to participate in the national final, an alternate pair will be chosen based on the order of finish at the site where that pair competed.
