A count of your winners shows that you have 2 spade tricks, 2 heart tricks, 2 diamond tricks and 5 club tricks – 11 winners. To develop 1 more trick, your strategy on this hand will be to hope that the diamonds are 3-3 and that you can develop your 4th diamond as an extra winner. Notice that on the actual layout above the diamonds are not 3-3 and that strategy will fail. Notice what happens if you run your long suit (clubs) first. Your right hand opponent will have to make 3 discards on the run of the clubs. Not being able to see your hand he will have to guess whether to pitch diamonds or hearts. If he guesses wrong and pitches diamonds, you can setup your 4th diamond as a trick. So – run your long suit and make the opponents guess what to discard. Hopefully they will guess wrong.
