Opening Lead: J

Declarer won the opening lead and immediately started to pull trump. He led the Queen of hearts won by East who returned the Queen of spades. Declarer continued with the Jack of trump won by West who then cashed the Ten of spades. The defense still had the Ace of diamonds to win and declarer was down one.

Declarer starts with 1 spade, 1 diamond and 2 trump losers. To avoid a spade loser, declarer must win the first spade and play a diamond before touching trump. Declarer can then pitch a spade loser on a good diamond before pulling trump (declarer gets to dummy by leading a low club to the Queen on the first club). Now he only loses a diamond and two trump to make his contract.
