*Help Suit Game Tries are one of the most valuable tools you can put in your arsenal.
Once a major fit has been clearly defined, all further suit bids by opener are looking for the possibility of game or slam and ASKING for help in that suit.

South has a very nice hand, but game is not a sure thing opposite a simple raise. The 3D bid ASKS for something good in that suit from pard. Any Ace, King, Queen, void, singleton, or doubleton with 4 trump constitutes a "yes, I have help" answer. With help, the response is 4 of the agreed major. Without help, the answer is 3 of the agreed major. When South finds partner with something useful in diamonds she assumes that her unsupported Queen (counted as 2 points) will be of value. North is glad to accept with a singleton (to say nothing about the great potential of the club suit).
When partner asks a question about diamonds - that is what you look at. Three small is the world's worst holding. Don't even think about it!

Change North's hand to (the same 8 points

and even 3 might go down one. And for sure game is less likely.

Or give North the following hand

and North answers yes and worst case, the game depends on the location of the J.

The idea of Help Suit Game Tries is to shore up the value of unsupported honors with something from partner. ie. Axx, Kxxx, Qxx, etc.

Try it you'll like it.
